The project centers around the redesign of an existing walled garden at the University of York. Surrounded by historic buildings and university walkways, the site offers a tranquil escape within the campus.

The design process began with a thorough site analysis to identify its strengths and weaknesses. Key challenges included limited accessibility, with a single main entrance and restricted routes, and opportunities for enhancing its functionality as a quiet retreat.

The concept aims to transform the space into a versatile and serene environment where visitors can relax after academic activities, such as visiting the library. By integrating creative design solutions, the walled garden is envisioned as a peaceful haven that blends seamlessly with its historic surroundings while supporting diverse uses for students and staff.

The redesigned walled garden at the University of York seamlessly blends history, functionality, and serenity to create a versatile and tranquil retreat for the university community. Key features include an open library space with a climate-adaptive design and removable café pavilion, a secret garden for quiet study, and a multi-purpose outdoor theatre with seating, lighting, and thoughtful planting for workshops and relaxation. Historic elements, such as the orangery and enclosed garden with rooms, have been preserved and repurposed to reflect Heslington's heritage, while additions like the therapeutic and ornamental grass gardens promote biodiversity and well-being. This harmonious integration of past and present transforms the space into a modern sanctuary for students and staff.
