Poornakupam, an island nestled between two rivers and connected to the sea, is envisioned as a vibrant, multifunctional landscape that harmonizes natural beauty with community engagement and healing. The site, covered 70% by coconut trees and aquatic vegetation thriving without soil, is uniquely adapted to its environment. It features a secure single entry and exit point, minimizing trespassing concerns, though one side faces seasonal flooding for two months each year. The master plan integrates various elements, including trekking routes through the woods for cancer rehabilitation patients from the on-site hospital, a food park at the entrance for social interaction, and three strategically positioned bridges offering breathtaking views. The design also pays tribute to Pondicherry's heritage with memorials honoring its freedom fighters. Local activities, such as a large flea market, fishing, a water park, and resort spaces, are integrated to celebrate the region's cultural and ecological identity. This thoughtfully curated space fosters healing, recreation, and community connection, making it a landmark destination.
As a landscape architect, I developed a comprehensive master plan for "The Landmark," integrating ecological, cultural, and functional elements to create a vibrant and sustainable space. The design includes key features such as a local flea market to support community commerce, a knowledge junction for education on agriculture and conservation, and a river eye view that offers a scenic introduction to the site's history and purpose. A food park at the entrance fosters community interaction, while designated trekking spots, a learning green space, an open-air museum, and a water park provide recreational and educational opportunities. Thoughtful planting strategies, including species like Couroupita guianensis and Azadirachta indica, enhance biodiversity and cultural significance. The design prioritizes accessibility, tranquility, and ecological stewardship, creating a harmonious space for relaxation, learning, and community engagement.
